Work-Life Balance: Navigating Parenthood and Business with Resilience

As a parent of a child with special education needs, every day brings something new. Yesterday began with a lovely play session with my little menace—who, in true toddler fashion, managed to eat someone else’s toast off the floor and fling herself off a toy rollercoaster. We got home just in time for the phone call from school: my son was tired, struggling, and needed to come home early.

An evening full of yawns and "I'm not tired" protests followed, complete with some tired tears for good measure. In these moments, I’m reminded just how lucky I am to have the flexibility that comes with being self-employed.

Running my own business means I can drop everything when my children need me, like today when my son needed some extra comfort and care. Even though juggling work and home life can get a bit chaotic, it’s worth it for the freedom to be there when it matters most.

As a virtual assistant, I’m used to keeping clients happy while ticking off tasks and running a household. But more than that, I’ve learnt that my business works for my family too, not just for my clients.

For any parent navigating the wonderful chaos of running a business and supporting their child’s unique needs, remember this: the flexibility that self-employment offers is priceless. It lets you be present for your family while building your own success on your terms.

Today, I juggled a tired, yawning child, a lively little menace, and a to-do list—and survived! If I can handle that, I can handle anything. Phew!
